"Revolutionary Change" happened that allowed the bug population to become resistant to chemical pesticides and continue its increase in numbers.

A bug that have been exposed to the same chemical pesticide and have survived developed an immunity from the said chemical pesticide. The genes of this bug is then passed along to its offspring, which enable it to become immune to the chemical pesticide.
