When a cell is immersed in salt water, if there is more salt inside the cell than the outside, there will be movement of water into the cell through the cell membrane (this will cause the swelling of the cell) but if there is more salt outside the cell than the inside, then water will move out of the cell. This will leads to the shrinking of the cell.

Upon immersion in salt water, water will start to flow out of the cells since the water potential inside the cells will be greater. When this happens, the cells will shrink.
