Giraffes having increasingly longer necks over time. According to Charles Darwin, the long neck of the giraffes came about as a result of long-term natural selection which favoured the survival of giraffes that had long necks instead of those with short necks. The long necks allowed the giraffes to forage for food from tall trees especially in the event that food on the ground became scarce. Since the longer neck giraffes were able to reach food in areas that their short neck counterparts were unable to, this means that the population of short-neck giraffes was naturally reduced, thus leaving long-neck giraffes to breed even more.
