Why does a delta often form when a river meets the ocean?

All the sediment and silt in the river will get deposited at the end of the rivers flow, aka where it meets the ocean. This is where you find delta's, which are large fan shaped deposits of sand, sediment, and silt and the end of a river where it meets the ocean. You can also find them in large rivers that "end" at a big lake.
