Explain why variations are important to understanding change in a population over time?

    Evolution occurs by survival of the fittest ... there is selection for organisms that have higher fitness over organisms that have lower fitness. If there is no variation in a species, every organism would have the same fitness and no selection would occur, therefore evolution could not occur.
