Adapt/evolve - over time the organism must be able to adapt to its environment, and/or the species must be able to evolve over many generations

Reproduction - it is able to reproduce either sexually or asexually

Response - must be able to detect and respond to stimuli

Growth and development - the multiplication and differentiation of cells

Energy - it is able to obtain and use energy

DNA - all living things must have genetic material
