The answer is It is the gap between neurons that ensures that information travels in one direction only.

When an action potential reaches presynaptic terminal on a neuron, it will induce a release of neurotransmitters from the neuron. Neurotransmitters pass through the synaptic gap and bind to the receptor on the postsynaptic neuron. Thus, information travels in one direction only.
