    The scientific knowledge about macromolecules which is a direct result of Gerardus Johannes Mulder's 1838 discovery is that all proteins contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. He studied proteins, and was actually the first person ever to use that term - although he wasn't the one who coined it. In his study named "On the composition of some animal substances," he discovered that protein is usually drawn from plants by many animals.
