    This happens during the first stage of mitosis, called Prophase. During Prophase, replicated chromosomes coil in various ways until they are condensed and thick enough to be visible using a light microscope. Also, nuclear envelope fragments and the nucleoli disappear preparing the cell for the next stage of mitosis.
