Punctuated equilibrium postulates that once a species has been formed it will exist in an evolutionary stasis. A new species can be formed from it such that 2 new branches will exist. This is unlike the concept that all species are evolving uniformly from the same specie over time. This is widely accepted as it explains why closely related species can exist at the same time as well origin species and new species.
