Red blood cells do not contain mitochondria. how do red blood cells generate most of their atp?

    Through anaerobic glycolysis, namely the steps were 1,3 bishosphoglycerate is turned into 2 phoshoglycerate and when phosphonenol pyruvate is converted to pyruvate. these steps provide 4 ATP per glucose molecule, however 2 ATP is needed to initialize the reaction so there is a net production of 2 ATP.
