What is meant when a bacterium is said to become resistant to an antibiotic?

    It means the antibiotic can no longer kill or inhibit the germs associated with the bacterium. One reason for this could be over-use of the particular antibiotic. Another would be the bacterium can change over time. Mutations sometimes occur that change how antibiotics can handle it.
