An increased blood flow carries excess waste products away from the active muscle cells

The purpose of an increased heart rate is to speed up the transfer of substances to and from the muscles (Oxygen to the muscles, CO2 and waste products away from the muscles), to aid the increased rate of respiration and to attempt to keep it aerobic as anaerobic respiration creates unwanted byproducts.
