What is the difference between a starch and a carbohydrate?

    It consists of a molecule each of the simple sugars glucose and fructose, and because it contains two sugars it's called a disaccharide. Other carbohydrates, or polysaccharides, are made from larger combinations of those basic sugars. For example, starches are made from long chains of glucose molecules.
