    Igneous rocks are categorized based on their silica content. According to this classification scheme, rocks with more than 65% silica content are called felsic, rocks having between 65% to 55% silica content are intermediate whereas rocks having between 55% to 45% silica content are called mafic. Moreover, those with silica content below 45% are called ultramafic.
