    A. Markers.

In order to identify the function of DNA and proteins, they used specific markers for each molecule. Radioactive phosphorus, which is only present in DNA and not in proteins was used to label the DNA whereas radioactive sulphur, which is only present in aminoacids and not in DNA, is used to label proteins. Once these radioactive substances were injected into the cell, their positions within the cell were tracked using radioactivity.
