    Species is a group of similar organisms able to reproduce (to exchange genes and interbreed) only within the group. That means that organisms from different species could not exchange genes. So, if two similar flies are no able to mate, it can be concluded that they are not the same species. Still, they are similar enough to belong to the same genus, but different species.
