How do interferons protect the body against viruses?

    There are different types of interferons. They may act as chemical messages between cells. They can be released by the infected cell, telling the uninfected cell to get rid of certain proteins on its cell surface where the virus can bind to and enter the cell. This way basically they have interfered with viral replication.
