Explain why genes close together on the same chromosome are said to be linked

Genes close together on the same chromosome are said to be linked because in the event of translocation of a portion of chromosome from one to other, the linked genes will get translocated together. This means that if we can track the movement of one gene between chromosomes, then the movement of linked genes can also be predicted from that of tracked genes.
