Enzymes are proteins which allow certain chemical reactions to take place much faster than they would occur on their own.

Enzymes function as catalysts which means they speed up the rate at which metabolic processes and reactions take place in the body. Enzymes remain unchanged during and after the reaction.

Usually the process or reactions are part of a cycle or pathway, with separate reactions at each step. Each step of a pathway or cycle usually requires a specific enzyme, without which it cannot be completed.

In the body, they speed up digestion of food and also reactions in energy producing processes and pathways like glycolysis, Krebs cycle and electron transport chain.
