Why does the energy decrease as we go along the food chain from producers to tertiary consumers?

    Because less animals means less energy that can be used.

    When food is consumed, most of the energy goes to the organism that eats it. And so, as another organism eats the other, it will only get a small portion of the energy that is left and so on.
