Most of the time it makes a covalent bond because of how many valence electrons it has. It has a 4 making it

    .

    . C.

    .

This makes it relatively easy to for it to form a covalent bond with, or a bond that shares an electron.

    Take a something like CO2

    C has 4 electrons

    O has 6 electrons

C will share 2 of its electrons with one O and 2 with the other O

This molecule now satisfy's the Octet Rule.
