Histones are proteins that are alkaline in nature, found inside the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. The main function of histones is that they act as spools around which DNA is wound so it can fit inside the cell nucleus.

The length of DNA is 6 feet. When wound around histones, this shortens to 0.09 millimeters. There are five types of histones designated or simply known as H1, H2, H3, H4 and H5.
