In pure water, a red blood cell from an animal will swell and burst, but a

leaf cell from a plant will not. the structure that is responsible for this is the cell wall.

The plant cell wall is made up of cellulose. Cellulose is a tough, complex sugar that is used as a structural carbohydrate.

Among other uses the plant cell wall prevents over expansion of the cell usually caused by too much water. Animal cells do not have a cell wall and this is why they burst when they take in too much water.
