Will road salt harm the environment?

Well when it snows the road salt definitely can wreck a car but a lot of wonder does it hurt the environment. when they lay down the salt and it snows eventually that snow melts turns into water and evaporates or flows into local water streams. so yes in some cases it can add extra salt to water that doesn't need it.
