What makes up the rails or sides of dna

    The backbone of the double helix is a repeating pattern of deoxyribase and phosphate groups. These two "rails" are joined by the adenine-thymine and cytosine-guanine base pairs. Chromosomes are two joined strands of DNA, not part of the DNA itself.
