When an atom loses an electron from its outermost shell, the atom is no longer electrically neutral as it now posses an electrical charge, and is thus called an ion, in this case it would be a cation. Also depending on how many electrons were present within the outermost shell, the shell would no longer be containing electrons or it still may.
