An increase in the biodiversity of an ecosystem leads to an increase in that ecosystems productivity because there are more relationships between the diverse organisms within that ecosystem. Since there are more diverse organisms, there are more foods and energy sources for the diverse organisms to thrive and ultimately reproduce. It can be said that the productivity of an ecosystem is directly proportional to the number of diverse species it contains.
