Continental rifts form when the continental crust spreads or splits apart. Such a formation usually has a narrow and flat structure. Those rifts are often called 'grabens' (the word's source is 'ditch' from German). There is no difference between grabens and continental rifts, however people use word 'graben' to describe a small rift.
