How do gases like CO2 contribute to the warming temperatures in the tropics?

The earths atmosphere acts as a blanket. When excessive gases such as CO2 overcrowd the earth, it causes the 'blanket' to get bigger, thus trapping the heat and insulating the earth just like a house, therefore making it warmer than nature intended.
