Hanging indents are the opposite of the usual indents. Regular indents have the first line indented anywhere from 1/2" to 1" and the subsequent lines all flush against the left margin. With hanging indents, lines from the second onward are indented anywhere from 1/2" to 1". These are usually used in areas like the Bibliography section of a research text.
