What was the name of the first successful national labor organization in the united states that offered membership to all workers regardless of occupation, education, gender or race?

    This labor union was called the knights of labor. They were the second national labor organization and were created in 1869 as a secret society. They opened up for public membership in 1881. However, they lost a lot of members after the mid-1880's due to their involvement in violent strikes and fights between the skilled and unskilled members.
