The attacks by the Vikings was one of the most brutal ones in Europe since it was vast and caused major changes in Europe. It was very difficult to be productive during war since most of the able men were busy fighting the war. Trade also needs peace and stability. Europe had non, thus trade became difficult.

    Europe had three major kingdoms in the ninth century: the kingdoms of Heptarchy, East Anglia and the City of York. All these kingdoms had separate rulers with different political ideas. This caused political division.

    After invasions by the Danes and the Vikings, Europe became a mass of small duchies and provinces.
