Each state controls its state campaign funding regulations. The laws and regulations vary from state to state, but most follow closely to the federal standards. The majority of the states use three methods to regulate campaign finance: (1) disclosure laws, (2) limits on contributions, and (3) public funding. State laws require the candidates to keep records of their expenses and revenue (funding), and the candidate submits these reports to either the local election commission or the state election commission (or both) as well to the public. Just as the federal government has caps on contributions, the states also place caps on campaign donations. Some states, as does the federal government, provide public funding for candidates. There is one caveat for this, the candidate can not receive private campaign donations, and the public funds are heavily regulated for the campaign.
