At a Subway restaurant, a toasted sandwich process uses a conveyor-fed oven. Maria is the sole operator of the sandwich-making process. In the first step of the process, she spends 2 minutes putting various ingredients in the sandwich. Then she puts the sandwich on a conveyor belt and, over a period of 12 minutes, the conveyor moves the sandwich from the beginning of the oven to the end of the oven, fully toasting it. After the sandwich comes out of the oven, Maria spends 1 minute slicing the sandwich and putting it in a box. At most, five sandwiches can fit in the oven at once. The toasting time in the oven does not depend on the number of sandwiches in the oven.

What is the hourly capacity of this sandwich-making process?

a) 12 sandwiches per hour

b) 36 sandwiches per hour

c) 25 sandwiches per hour

d) 20 sandwiches per hour

    Option (D).

    Explanation:

Computation of the given data are as follows:

At most 5 sandwiches can be put in the oven.

So, we can calculate the total time for 5 sandwiches by using following method:

    Total time taken for these 5 sandwiches in the oven = 12 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2

    = 20 minutes

    So, time taken per sandwich = 20 : 5

    = 4 minutes

So hourly capacity of sandwich making process is as follows:

Hourly Capacity of system = 60 minutes : 4 minutes

    = 20 sandwiches per hour
