    1789. Antoine Lavoisier born 26 August 1743 â€" 8 May 1794 was a French nobleman and chemist who in 1789 grouped known elements into categories called metals, non-metals, gases, and earth. Considered to be the father of modern chemistry Lavoisier is best noted for his discovery of oxygen's role in combustion. He recognized and named oxygen in 1778 and hydrogen 1783.
