    This was necessary to enable him examine the pressure-volume relationship without complications from other factors, such as changes in temperatures or amount of the gas. He varied the pressure and the volume of the gas and realized that the volume of a fixed mass of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure at constant temperature.
