The electron dot structure shows all of the electrons an atom possesses in its valence, or outer-most, shell.

Bromine is in the seventh group of the periodic table, the halogens, so it has seven valence electrons. In order to represent, we simply write "Br", the chemical symbol of bromine and draw a circle around it with seven dots, each dot representing one valence electron.
