As k2o dissolves in water, the oxide ion reacts with water molecules to form hydroxide ions. write the molecular and net ionic equations for this reaction.

    As the description above says, the molecular reaction is:

    K₂O (aq) + H₂O (l) → 2 KOH (aq)

    Make sure that you balance the reaction to obey the Law of Definite Proportions. This is done by making sure that the number of atoms of a certain element is equal in bot the reactant and product side of the reaction.

    To obtain the ionic equation, express all of the ionic forms of the aqueous solutions:

    K⁺ (aq) + O²⁻ (aq) + H₂O (l) → K⁺ (aq) + 2 OH⁻ (aq)

    The net ionic reaction is obtained when you delete the spectator ions: the ions that appear at both sides of the reaction. Thus, the net ionic reaction is

    O²⁻ (aq) + H₂O (l) → + 2 OH⁻ (aq)
