It is necessary in order for a hydrogen atom in a molecule to participate in a hydrogen bond because it is what completes the bond. It would not be called as a hydrogen bond without the hydrogen atom. It is a weak type of force that happens when a hydrogen atom is bonded to an atom which has a high electronegativity.
