What role does intermolecular forces play in the state something is in?

    Inter molecular forces can affect the state of something depending on their strength. Solids have strong inter molecular forces which keep particles still and packed close together, whereas gases for example have weaker forces that allow particles to be free from one another and disperse throughout a space. Liquids are somewhat in the middle.
