Only an unbalanced force will change an objects

Direction of motion. If the object exists in a plane with no outside forces acting upon it, or equal forces acting upon it, it will just sit there; however, an imbalance of force, such as an increase or decrease of force in an applied vector, will cause the object to change direction.
