When you burned copper, the product copper oxide appeared on the wire. Besides copper, the other reactant is oxygen, O2. Explain how you know it must be oxygen. Where did the oxygen come from?

    It must be oxygen because the result of the chemical reaction is CuO or copper oxide which has the oxygen atom in it. The oxygen came from the heating process because the oxygen is needed for the burning process. The equation for the burning process of copper wire is 2 Cu + O2 - - > 2 CuO where Cu is the copper, O is the oxygen and CuO, is the copper oxide.
