A flask apparatus is composed of 3 round flasks all connected to a single tube through a stopcock in the closed position for each flask. The first flask contains 1.15 L He at 207 torr. The second flask contains 1.15 L Ne at 0.458 atm. The third flask is much larger than the other two and contains 2.45 L at 23.8 kPa. what is the partial pressure of each gas and the total pressure after all the stopcocks are opened?

    The partial pressure of Helium (He) is 0.234 atm

    The partial pressure of Neon (Ne) is 0.234 atm

    The partial pressure of gas in the third flask is 0.497 atm

    The total pressure of the gas is 0.965 atm

    Explanation:

    First flask

    V1 = 1.15 L

    P1 = 207 torr = 207/760 = 0.272 atm

    Second flask

    V2 = 1.15 L

    P2 = 0.458 atm

    Third flask

    V3 = 2.45 L

    P3 = 23.8 kPa = 23.8/101.325 = 0.235 atm

    Total pressure (Pt) = P1 + P2 + P3 = 0.272 + 0.458 + 0.235 = 0.965 atm

    Total volume (Vt) = V1 + V2 + V3 = 1.15 + 1.15 + 2.45 = 4.75 L

    Partial pressure of He = V1/Vt * Pt = 1.15/4.75 * 0.965 = 0.234 atm

    Partial pressure of Ne = V2/Vt * Pt = 1.15/4.75 * 0.965 = 0.234 atm

    Partial pressure of gas in the third flask = V3/Vt * Pt = 2.45/4.75 * 0.965 = 0.497 atm
