Two samples of the same gas are labeled sample A and sample B. Sample A has a volume of 200 mL and a temperature of 50°C. Sample B has a volume of 500 mL and a temperature of 300 K. In which sample do the molecules have a higher average speed?

    Temperature is directly proportional to the average kinetic energy of the particles of a substance. The higher the temperature, the higher the average kinetic energy of the particles is.

    Sample A has a temperature of 323 K. Sample B has a temperature of 300 K. Since sample A has a higher temperature then the particles in A have a higher kinetic energy and hence a higher average velocity.
