When graphing an equation such as y=x+1, Y is conventionally placed on the vertical axis and x on the horizontal axis. The function expresses that the values of Y depend of the values of X, and changes in X will be proportionally expressed in Y, determined by an equation. So if you have the equation y = x + 1, when x = 1, then y = 2; when x = 2, then y = 3; and so on. On the x-axis you would write all the values for the independent variable, in this case X, and on the Y axis the result of the equation for each value of X, so the the dependent variable.
