A piece of a metal alloy with a mass of 114 g was placed into a graduated cylinder that contained 25.0 mL of water, raising the water level to 42.5 mL. What is the density of the metal?

    Density = Mass / Volume

    D = m/V

    Where m = mass of the metal alloy, V = volume of the metal alloy

    From Archimedes's principle,

    volume of water displace = volume of the metal alloy.

    Volume of water displaced = 42.5 - 25.0 mL = 17.5 mL.

    Given : m = 114 g = 0.114 kg, V = 17.5 mL = 17.5*10⁻⁶ m³.

    Substitute into equation 1

    D = 0.114 / (17.5*10⁻⁶)

    D = 6.51*10³

    D = 6510 kg/m³

    Hence the density of the metal = 6510 kg/m³
