In the simple Bohr model of the ground state of the hydrogen atom, the electron travels in a circular orbit around a fixed proton. The radius of the orbit is 5.28 * 10-11 m, and the speed of the electron is 2.18 * 106 m/s. The mass of an electron is 9.11 * 10-31 kg. What is the force on the electron?

    B = - 234789.373 Tesla

    Explanation:

    radius of the orbit (r):

    r = m*ν / q*B = 5.28 E-11 m

    ∴ q = - 1.602 E-19 C ... elementary electric charge

    ∴ m = 9.11 E-31 Kg ... mass of electron

    ∴ ν = 2.18 E6 m/s ... speed of the electron

    ∴ B: magnetic force on the electron

    ⇒ B = m*v / q*r

    ⇒ B = ((9.11 E-31 Kg) * (2.18 E6 m/s)) / ((-1.602 E-19 C) * (5.28 E-11 m))

    ⇒ B = - 234789.373 Kg / C. s

    ⇒ B = - 234789.373 T
