    When copper and nitrogen combine they formed the bond which is called ionic bond.

    Ionic bond:

    It is the bond which is formed by the transfer of electron from one atom to the atom of another element.

    Both bonded atoms have very large electronegativity difference. The atom with large electronegativity value accept the electron from other with smaller value of electronegativity.

    For example:

    The electronegativity of nitrogen is 3.04 and that of copper is 1.9. Nitrogen required three electrons to complete the octet while copper loses its one valance electron to complete the octet. Thus when both combine nitrogen atom accept three electrons from three atoms of copper and form ionic bond. The compound formed is called copper nitride.
