Determine the partial pressure of oxygen collected by water displacement if the water temperature is 20.0◦C and the total pressure of the gases in the collection bottle is 676 torr. PH2O at 20.0◦C is equal to 17.5 torr. Answer in units of torr.

    Answer: 658,5 torr

    Explanation: In a mix of gases, the total pressure is determined by the sum of pressures for each gas.

    In this case, oxygen is displacing water, although water is liquid at 20°C, there can be molecules in gas state, that means oxygen and water are present in the mix.

    In order to calculate partial pressure for oxygen water pressure have to be sustracted from total pressure:

    PO2 = Pt - PH2O

    PO2 = 676-17,5 = 658 torr
